Turmoil in Haiti

In February 2004, Haiti erupted in violence as anti-Aristide militias sought to overthrow his government. Aristide agreed to talks in order to find a way to resolve the situation. Haiti, the first black republic in the world, is one of the poorest country in western hemisphere. Its history is mired with coups and dictatorships since the independence in 1804. Aristide was forced to leave Haiti on February 29th, 2004.
